Yose ben Halaphta

(fl. 2nd cent)
   Palestinian tanna. A pupil of Akiva, he became the head of the academy in Sepphoris, and one of the leaders of the assemblies at Usha and Jabneh after the abolition of the Hadrianic decrees against the practice of Judaism. According to tradition, he was the author of the chronological work Seder Olam Rabbah. In the Talmud he is referred to as 'Rabbi Yose'.
